Ireland’s Greatest Football Shirts

Ireland’s Greatest Football Shirts

The Republic of Ireland has produced some brilliant footballers over the years. Though they’ve failed to win any major tournaments as a national team, Irishmen like Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, and Paul McGrath has dominated the game at their respective clubs. But what the Irish lack in trophies, they make up for in style. Here are some of our favorite Republic of Ireland football kits from the last few decades.

In 1990, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) was in its final year of a four-year national team sponsorship from automobile manufacturer Opel. Despite a contract renewal, FIFA officially banned the Irish from competing at the 1990 World Cup with the Opel sponsor. With the logo absent, they debuted this classic design in their opening game against England, a match we’ll never forget. This day saw one of the most bizarre moments in football history when English striker Gary Lineker soiled himself on the pitch.

2004 Republic of Ireland Home kit

Roy Keane leading Ireland before an international friendly

This shirt hallmarked Roy Keane’s final appearances for the national team. Shades of green alternate in stylish horizontal stripes throughout the body of the shirt. White fabric rounds off the trim of each sleeve and v-neck collar. A fashionable 2000’s design from the Irish.

1995-96 Republic of Ireland Away kit

FAI collaborated with Umbro in this cleverly color-coordinated mid 90’s away shirt. White serves as a canvas for striking orange and green prints to flow from the neckline to the flanks of the shirt. The pattern repeats on the back, and the Opel sponsor completes the look from this timeless era of Irish football. An excellent Irish football design that didn’t quite get as much time on the pitch as it deserved, as Ireland narrowly failed to qualify for the 1996 Euros tournament.

1994 Republic of Ireland World Cup Home kit | See Our Replica

Irish players line up for a team photo at the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

Our favorite football design from Ireland, this shirt appeared in one of the most peculiar group stage results of World Cup history. Alongside Mexico, Italy, and Norway, Ireland finished with 4 points from their 3 games. Not only did all teams in Group E finish with the same points, but they all had 0 goal difference as well. Ireland advanced at 2nd in the group but was sent home in the first knockout round after a 0-2 defeat to the Netherlands.
